When most of us think of “allergies”, we most likely think of seasonal allergies or those to animal dander, or mold. Maybe you think of allergies to bees or fish, that can kill you. The immune system is notorious for mounting defenses against substances that are not in themselves dangerous to us. These unhelpful responses, often referred to as “allergies” can cause us a lot of trouble. An allergy is an exaggerated reaction by the body (such as itchy eyes, sneezing, and rashes) to substances that are harmless to most people.

But seasonal allergies are just the tip of the iceberg, and there are several aspects of American life that can make your seasonal allergies, and the baseline inflammation in your body that brings them about, worse. Often, people don’t realize that a particular symptom they experience is tied to something they are doing in their lifestyle, namely what they eat or toxicants they are exposed to. When they start paying attention, many people will notice an increase in post nasal drip, or stuffy nose after they eat certain foods.

The immune system often creates inflammation and irritation when it reacts to food allergens and environmental toxicants.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to:

  • Respiratory abnormalities (asthma, difficulty breathing)
  • Cold symptoms (runny nose, sinus congestion, cough)
  • Skin irritations (hives, eczema, itching, skin rashes)
  • Holding excess weight (usually from fluid stored in the body)
  • Migraines and tension headaches
  • Digestive disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, gas, cramps, IBS, acid reflux)
  • Mood or cognitive anomalies (fatigue, hyperactivity, depression, panic attacks, brain fog)
  • Joint stiffness and/or pain

If you experience any of these issues, and haven’t explored the role your lifestyle is playing in your allergy symptoms, you are missing a big piece of the puzzle. Our clients’ allergic symptoms often completely disappear during their time with us.

At Medela Centers, we work with you to determine the role your lifestyle plays in your health issues, and we help you make the changes necessary so you are free of them!
